Established in 2012, independent brand Linde Werdelin has managed to carve out a niche in the luxury sports watch market by masterfully merging Swiss craftmanship and Danish design ingenuity. While the brand’s Spido collection traces its origins to a passion for alpine adventure, Linde Werdelin’s appreciation of exploration extends far beyond snow-covered peaks. Inspired by underwater exploration, the brand’s Oktopus collection offers impressive water resistance and solidity, underpinned by a substantial 300m water resistance rating.

A different breed of divers

Linde Werdelin's Oktopus range distinguish themselves through its modern angular cases that were inspired by the brand’s flagship dive computer. Called the Reef, this digital instrument could be attached seamlessly onto Linde Werdelin’s divers to provide additional diving information. While the Reef has been discontinued, current Linde Werdelin Oktopus watches reflect this legacy. Continuing the approach seen in the Spido collection, Linde Werdeline has played around with exotic materials such as the pioneering 3DTP carbon, which is produced using a technique of layering thin sheets of carbon. For other Oktopus models, Linde Werdelin has opted to use titanium or gold instead.

The Oktopus occupies a distinctive place among modern dive watches. While all models share a 44mm x 15mm case design, each brings something distinctive to the table, whether in materials or aesthetics. Another common denominator across Oktopus models is the thick bezel held together in place by a total of eight screws. Adding to their appeal, every Oktopus model incorporates either a moon-phase complication or a double-date display. This results in a dive watch that easily stands apart through both its design and functionality.

A dial worth studying

Linde Werdelin’s Oktopus timepieces instantly captivate with their five-layer skeletonized dial featuring larger numerals at 3, 6, and 9 coated with LumiNova and thicker dauphine-style hands rendered in titanium hues. Linde Werdelin plays with some bright color accents on its Double Date timepieces, which are matched with the strap on select models. For its moon complication models, the shades are a lot more restrained, inspired by all the ever-changing hues of the celestial body, from which the collection takes its name.

Custom built, inside and out

One of Linde Werdelin’s greatest strengths lies in its custom movements. In the case of the Oktopus collection, the Double Date models benefit from a modified Dubois Dépraz calibre 14580. The large date aperture is visible at 12 o’clock on the dial, while the date wheel sits below the dial. As for the Moon models, the movement is also a bespoke option with an in-house moonphase complication, originally conceived and developed in 2009 together with Danish master watchmaker Svend Andersen of Anderson Geneve.
