Hailing from the beautiful New Zealand, Auckland-based microbrand Magrette was established by Dion Wynyard McAsey, whose passion for watches dates back to childhood when he received his first watch as a gift from his mother. Inspired by old-world Italian style, New Zealand’s rich culture and the founder’s passion for yachting, Magrette produces watches in restricted batches with a strong focus on quality.

A GMT With a Kiwi Twist

Magrette’s flagship line is the Moana, which means “ocean” in Māori. There are several sub-collections available, including the Moana Pacific Waterman GMT series, which brings a “flyer” GMT complication with a jumping local hour hand. Featuring a 40mm case made of Grade 2 Titanium, the GMT arrives with a matte dial with large baton indices that have been doubled at the cardinal points. A fully-lumed 24-hour bezel with a ceramic insert available in a two-tone colourway on some models allows for convenient tracking of a third time zone. As for power, this GMT relies on the Miyota 9075 automatic calibre to sustain life onboard.

Since its debut, Magrette has established itself in the watch space with its line of sports and dive-style watches that blend retro appeal with modern sensibility. Design-wise, Magrette timepieces distinguish themselves with their bold cushion cases, which contribute to their chunky, vintage aesthetic. The brand’s emblem is another point of distinction, taking the form of a shield containing the Koru, a New Zealand symbol inspired by the unfurling frond of the silver fern and evoking perpetual movement.

A Tool Watch for the Pros

Wanting to create the ultimate tool watch, Magrette came up with the Moana Pacific Professional Destro series. Packing an impressive 43mm case forged out of bead-blasted Titanium Grade 5 and featuring a helium escape valve, it’s made for professional users. As the name suggests, the crown has been moved to the left side of the watch for added comfort and protection. The dial is offered in a matte black finish or wrapped in black DLC coating and boasts oversized Arabic numerals at the cardinal points for exceptional legibility. A dive 60-minute bezel with a ceramic insert frames the dial. Magrette has opted to equip the series with the Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1B automatic movement.

The Compact Moana

Magrette’s Moana collection also includes a range designed for women called simply Moana. Featuring a guilloche-style dial with oversized Arabic numerals at the cardinal points and baton-style cutouts for the rest of the indices, the Moana has a Sellita SW260 movement underneath the hood. The watch is housed in a confident 38mm cushion case made of stainless steel. In keeping with the sporty spirit of Magrette watches, the Moana ships with a FKM rubber strap and a 200m water resistance rating.
