Having already captured attention with its retro-driven dive and sports watches, Maen, the Stockholm-based brand created by two Dutchmen, turned its gaze to the sky for its next source of inspiration. The Skymaster 38 chronograph collection pays tribute to the iconic Douglas DC-4 Skymaster, the aircraft used by Dutch airline KLM to operate the very first transatlantic flight between Amsterdam and New York.

Sunray state of mind

Beyond the bezel, the most striking evolution in the Skymaster lies in its dial. The latest models trade the previous sandblasted base for a sunray one, lending the watch a more dynamic presence. Drawing from the 1960s Pie-Pan designs, the new Skymaster features a recessed chapter ring and lowered subdials with their own unique radial texture. Vintage cues continue to reveal themselves with the lume-filled Dauphine hands and slender, polished applied markers.

As its name suggests, the Maen Skymaster first took flight as a pilot-oriented timepiece coming with a 12-hour rotating bezel. The latest iteration, however, shifts gears with the addition of a fixed, soundblasted tachymeter bezel for measuring average speeds, reimagining the watch as a dynamic racing chronograph. Whichever path you choose, both variants share a compact 38mm stainless steel case, a 13.4mm profile, and 100m of water resistance.

Beneath the surface, the Skymaster 38 collection is driven by the Sellita SW510Mb, a manual-winding movement known for its reliability and precision. Presented here in Top Grade form, it’s fully decorated and on display through the exhibition caseback. With an impressive 63-hour power reserve, it ensures lasting performance between winds.

Wear it your way

Every bit the classic chronograph, the Skymaster features classic pump pushers flanking a non-screw-down crown on the right side of the case. The newest iteration of the Skymaster is delivered on an elegant 5-link stainless steel bracelet, while the previous version features a sportier 3-link design. For those seeking a more casual feel, rubber straps round out the offering.
