Brew, an independent watch brand known for its timepieces with a unique connection to coffee, is taking its signature aesthetic to the next level with the Retrograph collection. With this line, Brew takes a bolder, more angular approach, introducing a series of chronographs with a rectangular stainless steel case and ‘70s retro design cues.
The dial on the Brew Retrograph features two subdials at 3 (24-hour indicator) and 9 o’clock (60-minute counter), which mirror the rectangular shape of the case. A large date window at 6 o’clock lends the design a pleasing sense of balance. Squares of lume applied at the end of each hour indicator enhance legibility. Most of Brew’s watches feature subtle references to coffee-making and the Restrograph is no different. Nestled within the chapter ring is a scale between 12 and 7 o’clock that tracks the extraction time for the perfect espresso shot.
The brand’s founder, Jonathan Farrer, was inspired by the so-called “telephone timers” of the ‘30s and ‘50s in developing the Retrograph collection. These timepieces featured hash marks at three-minute intervals on the minutes subdial. This was done because phone calls used to be paid for in 3-minute intervals on most pay phones. Brew adapted this concept to fit its coffee-inspired approach to watchmaking.

Hybrid heart inside
Brew’s Retrograph collection is powered by the Meca-quartz hybrid movement Seiko VK64, offering a sweeping seconds hand and an instant-reset chronograph. The watch has a solid back design featuring Brew’s engraved logo. A 50m water resistance rating and a sapphire crystal allow for peace of mind for daily wear.
Turning up the character
The Brew Retrograph comes in multiple colour configurations, but they all have in common the 38mm case with a 10.4mm thickness, keeping the overall package compact and wearable for a broad range of wrists. Brew is known for its integrated bracelet watches, but the Retrograph takes a different approach and ships with a matching leather strap, which gives cohesiveness to the design.
